Homegrown Gourmet #4: Stews & Casseroles
By Michelle | December 9, 2007

As the winner of Round 3 of the HomeGrown Gourmet event for my Creamy Leek Tart, I am excited to host December’s event. After pondering for a while I decided the theme for this month will be Stews & Casseroles.
Winter is officially upon us (in the northern hemisphere) and it’s time to switch on our ovens, take out our crockpots and pressure cookers. Stews and casseroles don’t have to contain meat, i.e. it can be vegetarian or even vegan. Check out the Sweet Potato, Spinach & Mushroom Stew for example. Soups are unfortunately not allowed for this round because it has already been a theme in Round 2. Please check out the Wikipedia links above for some inspiration.
A while back I have posted an oxtail recipe which will represent South Africa. The reason I love this event is because it has the potential to teach you so much about other cultures and cuisines, so if you have a nugget of the dish’s history to share with all of us it would be great!
Rules
Anyone can play!
A theme will be picked by the host. Participants will make a dish that follows the theme and that somehow represents their home region- town, state, area. Representation can feature a local ingredient, be a traditional dish from your area, or be a creative twist.
Participants will have 3-4 weeks (host discretion) to complete their recipes and post them to their blog (or email the pics and text), and notify the host. The host will then post the results and then let everyone know via email or message board the results are up! An explanation of your dish is required; it can be a story about the local custom or ingredient, how you came about eating/ making the recipe, or an explanation about how your creative dish fits the theme.
Fresh and local foods are encouraged!
When the round is done, the host will announce their favorite dish by updating their blog. Favorite is completely subjective to the host- no one expects the host to make and taste test all the dishes, it is just something that strikes the host’s fancy! The creator of the favourite gets the honor of hosting the next round, if they so choose!
How to Participate
Please send an email to michelle (at) greedygourmet (dot) com [all one word, no spaces, check the Contact page if you are unsure] with “HomeGrown Gourmet 4″ in the subject, with your name, blog name and URL, location, and permalink to your entry. Please attach a picture (preferably 400px in height or width, I can resize if needed) of your dish to the email. Deadline for the event is Monday, 31 December. Come on people! Show me what you got!
